TIME FOR PRAYER with George Mkandawire ‘PEMPHERO’!
George Mkandawire was born on 1st January 1976. His first music experiences were with the brothers Gift and Tiwonge Mhango. In 2000 George linked up with the late, great Chuma Soko whose musical influence inspired George deeply and later that year George recorded his first solo album ‘Nthawi Yakwana” which received critical acclaim. George performed frequently and gained recognition as the most popular young gospel artist. George’s next album “Themba” in 2003 included the song ‘Thanthwe’ a national hit which catapulted him to superstar status. His following album ‘Ulendo’ sealed his status as the ‘Prince of Gospel Music’.
Called to preach and called to music, George uses his famously inimitable voice to sing on Christian themes of mercy, guidance, spiritual battles, miracles and salvation. He has threaded these into the titular theme Pemphero (Prayer). On Pemphero, George remains true to the Malawi market and predominantly sings in Chichewa, Tumbuka ‘Gomezga’ and offers his first ever English song ‘Never Give Up’. He also delivers the gospel using Malawi’s favorite music style, reggae. The result is a surprising gift - the flawless combination of George’s natural dexterity and Jay Munthali’s soulful reggae calibration on production creates Pemphero- a masterpiece album.
In the past George has used many influences like R & B, samba, jazz and traditional Malawian rhythms in his music, making him celebrated for his flexibility. In Pemphero he offers something new and exciting in the reggae aspect. The release single Mundikhululukire is a desperate plea for forgiveness and salvation which is powerfully depicted in the new video. Continuing to share his personal experiences, on the track Palibe, George speaks on the boundless power of God and faithfully singing ‘Never Give Up’ that despite the trials ‘in my darkest hour you never left me’ ‘from shame to fame’ God proves his infinite power. George continues to be a crowd puller at gospel music events. George launches his album with a powerful concert at French Cultural Centre featuring appearances from his fellow gospel artists at French Cultural Centre in March 2008.
